A HISTORIC homestead on one of the Top End’s oldest pastoral stations has been listed for expressions of interest.

Built in 1879, the Springvale Homestead Park is situated on a huge 34.33 hectare (84 acre) block in Cossack, about 14km from Katherine

It is zoned for tourist commercial use and was most recently operated as a tourism business, up until several years ago.

The property’s features include the main homestead, an ancillary barn, a three-bedroom caretakers’ cottage, 10 powered camp sites and a swimming pool, as well as three declared cultural heritage sites.

The riverfront block also features a natural spring-fed creek and a freshwater creek.

According to an online ad, the property could be used for tourism or a host of other purposes.

“This property calls for the passion of a visionary investor or developer while it patiently awaits the next chapter of history to unfold,” the ad states.

“Any application would need to be approved by council but opportunities (include) short stay accommodation / farm stay / eco pods / caravan park etc.

“Other options to explore: education or retirement / aged care, as there is a shortage in the area.”

The ad states the property was one of the first two “substantial” homesteads to be built in the Katherine region, and the only one still standing.

Katherine Museum chief executive Brendan Penzer said the property had a rich history spanning the NT’s early pastoral development, World War II and 20th century Australian literature.

“It’s so important to the pioneering history and the early non-Indigenous settlement history of the region, and of the Territory,” he said.

“It’s a pivotal place, in terms of the people that lived there and the reasons they ended up there. It was all about connecting Australians across the continent and opening up the north for more settlement.”
